SeARCH Education

In first semester of the academic year 2018/19, the SeARCH cluster will be the training platform for more than 300 students of following Credit Units: Computer Architecture, Parallel Computing, Distributed Parallel Computing and Advanced Computing, of the Master’s Degree in Informatics Engineering and of the Master’s Degree in Physics Engineering.

Intel Xeon Broadwell Processors

In September 2017, were installed four nodes with Xeon Broadwell processors.
Two nodes equipped with two E5-2683v4 processors and 256 GB of RAM. Two other nodes equipped with two E5-2660v4 processors and 128GB of RAM.
Three of these nodes were funded by the Center of Biological Engineering (CEB), while the other was funded by the Institute for Polymers and Composites (IPC), University of Minho research centers.

Intel Xeon Phi Knights Landing node

Since the end of 2016, SeARCH cluster integrates a node with Intel Xeon Phi Knights Landing (KNL), the second generation of Intel MIC (Many Integrated Core) architecture.

Specifically, the configuration of this node consists of a Xeon Phi 7210, a bootable host processor, with 64 cores, base frequency of 1.30 GHz, 192 GB of RAM and with the operating system CentOS 7.2, version from which the processor is supported.

SeARCH-ON2 Installed

In the last quarter of 2014, was done the installation of new equipment under the project “Search-ON2: Revitalization of HPC infrastructure of UMinho” (NORTE-07-0162-FEDER-000086), co-funded by the North Portugal Regional Operational Programme (ON.2 – O Novo Norte), under the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF), through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).” This operation took place in 3 phases: first phase corresponded to the installation of 20 compute nodes, each with two Xeon processors 2650V2 (8 cores, 2.6GHz), 64GB RAM and 120GB SSD. In the second phase were installed 6 nodes to explore emerging technologies, which includes four nodes with two Xeon processors E5-2695V2 (12 cores 2.40GHz), 64GB RAM, 120GB SSD and two accelerators Xeon Phi 7120X and two more nodes with two Xeon processors E5-2695V2, 64GB RAM, 120GB SSD and with 2 GPUs NVidia Tesla K40M. The third phase consisted of installing a storage system composed by a SAN with 48TB of raw capacity for user’s homes and four storage nodes, each with two Xeon processors 2650V2 (8 cores, 2.6GHz), 64GB RAM and with 12TB of storage space, dedicated to the treatment of large volumes of data (scratch and bigdata).
